Spicy bell pepper dal/ bell pepper pachadi

I've been slagging in writing new posts... winter woes has been never ending @ our house *sigh*

This is yet another favorite dish of my kid. Usually its made with green bell pepper, I had a red one sitting alone in the fridge.. so thought it would make the dish even colorful.

Serves: 2
Red bell pepper - 1
Onion - 1 small
Tomato - 1 small
Toor dal - 1/2 cup

Sambar powder - 1 spoon
Lemon - to taste

To temper
Mustard seeds
Urad dal
Red chilli


  • Boil the dal in water with turmeric powder or pressure cook - but not overly mushy
  • Heat a spoon of oil in kadai and splutter mustard seeds, urad dal, red chilli, hing
  • Add onions and saute. then add the tomatoes and cook 
  • Add the chopped bell pepper and saute
  • Add the dal and sambar powder, salt and let it cook
  • Squeeze lemon after tasting as needed and swtich off
For kids, you can take off some by adding 1/2 the amount of sambar powder and the for adults you can add the rest and let it cook for few minutes.
