Red poha (aval) upma

Recently I came across the red poha in the store. I'm used to make upma with white poha all the time for breakfast (my kid loves it). So I was curious to try out the same with the red aval.

Red poha is rich in fiber and nutrition compared to the white one. The upma did come out well. Its reall quick and done in a jiffy!

Number of servings : 1 Adult + 1 Kid :)
Red Poha - 1 cup
Onion - 1/2
Water - 1 cup
Salt - to taste

Optional - can try adding shredded carrots to it.

To temper:
Red chilli - 1
Mustard seeds
Urad dal


  • Heat a spoon of oil and splutter mustard seeds, urad dal, red chilli (you can use green chilli.. I substituted it with red because green one is really hot for kids)
  • Add chopped onions and saute
  • Then add the water and salt and wait until its heated
  • When the water starts to boil, add the poha and keep stirring. Upma is done!
